Staying Near Newport Station — Why Location Changes Everything

If you're working in Newport or commuting to Cardiff, being near the station changes your entire stay. Here's why our guests keep coming back to Junction House.

There's a question we get asked a lot: "How far is your property from Newport station?"

The answer for Newport Junction House is ridiculous. You can literally see it from the bedroom window. Cross the road, and you're on the platform. Two minutes, door to door, even if you're carrying luggage.

We didn't plan it that way — we just got lucky with the location. But it's become the single biggest reason guests book with us over anywhere else in Newport.

Here's why that matters more than you'd think.

12 Minutes to Cardiff. 30 to Bristol. 90 to London.

Newport station sits on the Great Western Main Line. That means:

  • Cardiff Central — 12 minutes
  • Bristol Temple Meads — 30 minutes
  • London Paddington — 90 minutes
  • Swansea — 55 minutes

If you're working a contract in Cardiff but don't want to pay Cardiff accommodation prices, staying in Newport and commuting is a no-brainer. Our nightly rate for a full apartment is often less than a single hotel room in Cardiff Bay.

One of our regular guests — a project manager for a construction firm — stays at Junction House every time his team has work in the Cardiff-Newport corridor. His words: "I can be at Cardiff Central before my coffee goes cold."

No Car? No Problem.

A lot of our guests don't have cars. They fly into Cardiff, take the train to Newport, and walk to our property. No taxi. No Uber. No navigating one-way systems at 11pm after a long day.

That's the real luxury of being next to the station. You don't need a car to function.

That said — if you do have a car, there's free on-street parking directly outside. Several of our contractor guests drive vans, and there's always space.

What's Actually Around Newport Station?

One thing we've noticed is that people who haven't been to Newport recently still picture the old Newport. The city has changed a lot. Here's what's within walking distance of our property:

Food & Drink (5-10 min walk):

  • Friars Walk — restaurants, Nando's, Five Guys, independent cafés
  • Newport Market (newly renovated) — street food, coffee, bakeries
  • Tiny Rebel Brewery taproom — if you like craft beer, this is a must
  • Multiple takeaways on the surrounding streets

Essentials:

  • Tesco Express, Spar, Co-op — all within 10 min walk
  • Post Office on Commercial Street
  • Boots pharmacy at Friars Walk

Getting Around:

  • Bus station adjacent to the train station
  • Cardiff Airport — 40 min by car
  • M4 Junctions 24-28 — 5 min drive

Healthcare (for NHS staff staying with us):

  • Royal Gwent Hospital — 8 min walk
  • St Woolos Hospital — 12 min walk

That last point matters. We host a lot of locum doctors and agency nurses. Being able to walk to the hospital after a night shift, without worrying about driving tired, is a genuine safety benefit.

Why Long Stays Work Here

We've hosted guests for anything from 5 nights to 4 months at Newport Junction House. The longer stays tend to be:

  • Contractor teams on M4 corridor projects — data centres, metro construction, steelworks maintenance
  • Corporate relocation guests who've started a new job and need somewhere while they house-hunt
  • NHS professionals on 3-6 month rotational placements

What they all have in common: they need their stay to not feel like a hotel. They want to cook dinner, do laundry, sit on a sofa, and have their own bedroom. Hotel living wears people out after a week. We hear this constantly.
