You've just been offered a placement at University Hospital of Wales — the biggest teaching hospital in Wales — and now you're trying to figure out where to stay. You've looked at Premier Inn Cardiff North (£85/night, no kitchen, no washing machine). You've scrolled through Airbnb and found a spare bedroom in someone's house for £60/night where you'll share a bathroom.

Neither option works when you're doing 12-hour shifts and need proper rest, proper food, and somewhere to wash your scrubs.

We've hosted NHS staff from Royal Gwent in Newport for years. Now we have a property 5 minutes from Heath Hospital — and it was set up with healthcare workers in mind.

Where Is the University Hospital of Wales?

University Hospital of Wales (commonly known as Heath Hospital or UHW) is in the Heath area of north Cardiff, just off the A48 Eastern Avenue. It's the major teaching hospital for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and one of the largest hospitals in the UK, with over 1,000 beds.

Velindre Cancer Centre — Wales' specialist cancer treatment hospital — is a 10-minute drive from Heath Hospital, also in the Whitchurch area.

Both hospitals are served by the same residential suburbs: Whitchurch, Heath, and the Whitchurch Road corridor. That's exactly where our property sits.

Our Property: Whitchurch Privé

Whitchurch Privé is a modern 1-bedroom ground floor flat on Whitchurch Road, one of Cardiff's main arterial roads.

Key facts for NHS staff:

  • 5 minutes from Heath Hospital (UHW) by car or bus
  • 10 minutes from Velindre Cancer Centre
  • Ground floor — no stairs after a long shift
  • Fully equipped kitchen — cook proper meals, not microwave porridge
  • In-unit washing machine — wash scrubs and uniforms without a trip to a laundrette
  • Smart TV and WiFi — unwind properly on days off
  • Quiet residential street — sleep during the day after night shifts
  • From £65/night, all-inclusive — utilities, WiFi, linen, everything included

The flat sleeps up to 3, making it suitable for solo locums or two colleagues sharing a placement.

Getting to Heath Hospital

From Whitchurch Privé, you have several options:

ModeRouteTime
CarWhitchurch Road → A48 Eastern Avenue5 min
BusCardiff Bus 21/23/24/25 along Whitchurch Road10-15 min
CycleFlat roads via Heath Park8 min
WalkVia Roath Park and Heath Park25 min

For night shifts, the 5-minute car journey matters. After 12 hours on your feet, you want to be home quickly — not stuck on a 30-minute bus from the city centre.

Why Not Stay in Cardiff City Centre?

It's a fair question. Cardiff city centre has plenty of hotels. Here's why they don't work for NHS placements:

Hotels (Premier Inn, Travelodge, Holiday Inn):

  • £80-120/night — adds up fast over a 4-8 week placement
  • No kitchen — you're eating out or ordering Deliveroo every meal
  • No washing machine — laundrette trips or expensive hotel laundry
  • City centre noise — try sleeping at 10am after a night shift with traffic, sirens, and stag parties outside
  • Parking is £10-15/day extra

Our flat:

  • £65/night, all-inclusive
  • Full kitchen, washing machine, quiet suburb
  • Free parking available
  • You save money just by cooking

Over a typical 28-night locum placement:

City Centre HotelWhitchurch Privé
Accommodation£2,800 (£100/night)£1,820 (£65/night)
Food (eating out vs cooking)£840 (£30/day)£280 (£10/day)
Parking£350 (£12.50/day)Included
Laundry£120Included
Total£4,110£2,100

That's nearly £2,000 saved over a single placement — and you live better, not worse.

What's Nearby

One of the underrated things about staying in Whitchurch versus the city centre is the local area. It's a proper neighbourhood, not a hotel corridor.

Within 5 minutes on foot:

  • Roath Park and Lake — Cardiff's most beautiful park, perfect for a decompression walk after a shift
  • Whitchurch High Street — local shops, pharmacy, takeaways, Spar
  • Cafés and restaurants on Whitchurch Road

Within 10-15 minutes:

  • Cardiff city centre — by bus (routes 21, 23, 24, 25 run regularly)
  • Velindre Cancer Centre — by car
  • Lidl and Aldi — for weekly shops

Within 20 minutes:

  • Cardiff Bay — waterfront restaurants, Millennium Centre, Senedd
  • Bute Park — green space in the city centre

After an intense shift, being able to walk to Roath Park Lake, sit by the water for 20 minutes, then walk home to your own flat — that's a completely different experience from staring at hotel walls.
