A Local's Guide to Barry — Beyond Barry Island

Barry is more than Gavin & Stacey and the fairground. Here's what locals actually love about this underrated coastal town — and why it's a surprisingly great place to stay.

Most people know Barry for two things: Barry Island and Gavin & Stacey.

Fair enough. The beach is gorgeous and the show is iconic. But if that's all you know about Barry, you're missing the actual town — which has quietly become one of the most interesting places on the South Wales coast.

We've been running our Barry Vibes property here for a while now, and the thing guests always say is: "I didn't expect Barry to be this nice."

So here's what's actually going on in Barry.

Barry Island (Obviously)

Yes, we're starting with the obvious one. But Barry Island deserves more than just a mention.

Whitmore Bay is a proper sandy beach with clean water, good facilities, and enough space that it doesn't feel overcrowded even on a sunny Saturday. The promenade has been regenerated nicely — independent food stalls, ice cream shops, a handful of decent restaurants.

The funfair is still there. It's small, slightly retro, and kids love it. If you've watched Gavin & Stacey, you'll recognise Marco's Café — and yes, they do a good breakfast.

When to visit: Early morning or late afternoon for the beach. The sunset from Whitmore Bay is genuinely stunning — one of those things that looks better in real life than in photos.

Porthkerry Country Park

This is our hidden gem recommendation. Five minutes from our property, Porthkerry is 220 acres of woodland, meadows, and a dramatic viaduct that runs through the valley.

There's a pebble beach at the bottom of the park that most tourists never find. The woodland walks are beautiful year-round, and there's a small café near the car park that does proper coffee and Welsh cakes.

If you're staying with us for work and need somewhere to decompress after a shift, a 30-minute walk through Porthkerry will sort you out.

The High Street

Barry's High Street has had a genuine independent revival. Some highlights:

  • Hang Fire Southern Kitchen — if you like BBQ, this is considered one of the best in Wales. They've been featured on Saturday Kitchen and in national food guides. Worth booking in advance.
  • Ffwrnes Pizza — sourdough pizza, local beers, and a no-fuss atmosphere
  • The Barry Tap — rotating craft beer taps
  • Sunflower & I — excellent brunch, homemade cakes
  • The Goods Shed — events space and market in the restored railway building

There's also the usual essentials — Tesco, Iceland, Boots, takeaways of every variety — all walkable from our property.

For the Gavin & Stacey Fans

If you're visiting because of the show, here's your hit list:

  • Marco's Café on the seafront — Nessa's workplace
  • Trinity Street — Stacey's house (the one with the bay window)
  • The promenade — various filming locations
  • Barry Island Pleasure Park — the funfair scenes

The recent Gavin & Stacey Christmas special brought a fresh wave of visitors. Barry embraces it — there's a dedicated walking trail and the locals are genuinely proud of the connection.

Working in the Vale of Glamorgan?

Barry isn't just a holiday destination. It has a working industrial side that brings contractors and business travellers:

  • Dow Silicones (formerly Dow Corning) — major chemical manufacturing site, 10 min from our property
  • ABP Barry Docks — port logistics and industrial facilities
  • Cardiff Airport — 15 min drive
  • Aberthaw area — industrial and energy sites
  • Cardiff city centre — 20 min by train from Barry station

For contractors working at any of these sites, our 3-bedroom house sleeps up to 6 with free parking, kitchen, and all the amenities you need for an extended stay. It's significantly cheaper than anything in Cardiff — and you get a whole house rather than a hotel room.

The 20-Minute Cardiff Connection

One thing that surprises people: Barry to Cardiff is just 20 minutes by train. The Vale of Glamorgan line runs regular services from Barry station to Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street.

This makes Barry an excellent base if you're:

  • Working in Cardiff but want affordable accommodation
  • Attending events at the Principality Stadium or Cardiff Bay
  • Exploring South Wales and want a coastal home base

Our nightly rate for a 3-bedroom house in Barry is often less than a single hotel room in Cardiff city centre. Something to think about.
