Contractor Accommodation in Cardiff — Serviced Apartments vs Hotels

Working on a Cardiff construction project or infrastructure contract? Here's the real cost comparison between hotels, Airbnb, and serviced apartments — and why booking direct saves your team money.

Cardiff is in the middle of a building boom. The South Wales Metro is reshaping public transport across the region. Central Square has transformed the area around Cardiff Central station. The Atlantic Wharf regeneration is bringing thousands of new homes and commercial space to Cardiff Bay. And the semiconductor cluster in nearby Newport is pulling in specialist contractors from across the UK.

If you're managing a team on any of these projects, you already know the accommodation problem: hotels are expensive, Airbnb is unreliable for a team of builders, and corporate apartments involve 6-month leases. You need somewhere your crew can stay for 2 weeks to 6 months, with a kitchen, a washing machine, parking, and enough space that people aren't on top of each other after a 10-hour shift.

That's what we do.

Our Cardiff Properties

We currently have two properties in Cardiff, covering different parts of the city:

Whitchurch Privé — North Cardiff

  • 1 bedroom, ground floor flat, sleeps up to 3
  • From £65/night, all-inclusive
  • Location: Whitchurch Road — 10 min to city centre, 10 min to M4 (Jct 32)
  • Best for: Solo contractors, pairs, or small teams who need an affordable base with good road access north

Cardiff Bay Studio — Cardiff Bay

  • 1 bedroom studio, sleeps 2
  • From £72/night, all-inclusive
  • Location: Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff Bay — waterfront, walking distance to city centre
  • Best for: Business travellers, corporate contractors, or anyone working in the Bay area

Both include WiFi, kitchen, Smart TV, linen, and all utilities. No hidden charges.

The Real Cost: Hotels vs Serviced Apartments

Let's run the numbers for a solo contractor staying 5 nights (Monday to Friday):

Cardiff Hotel (Premier Inn / Travelodge)

ExpenseDailyWeekly
Room rate£90£450
Parking£12£60
Evening meal (eating out)£15£75
Breakfast (if not included)£8£40
Lunch (grabbed on the go)£8£40
Laundry (weekly)£15£15
Total£680

Whitchurch Privé (Serviced Apartment)

ExpenseDailyWeekly
Nightly rate (book direct)£65£325
ParkingIncluded£0
Self-catering meals£10£50
LaundryFree (in-unit washer)£0
WiFi, utilitiesAll included£0
Total£375

That's £305 saved per person per week. For a team of 3, that's nearly £1,000/week — or over £4,000 across a month-long project.

And that's before you factor in the quality of life difference. Your crew gets a proper kitchen to cook dinner, a sofa to sit on, a washing machine for work clothes, and their own space — not a hotel room with a kettle and a trouser press.

What Contractors Actually Need

After years of hosting tradesmen, engineers, and construction teams, here's what matters:

1. Parking That Fits a Van

Hotel car parks either don't fit transit vans or charge £15/night for the privilege. Our properties have parking included — with space for work vehicles.

2. A Working Kitchen

Your crew isn't going to eat at Pizza Express every night for 3 months. A proper kitchen with an oven, hob, fridge, and microwave means they can do a weekly shop and eat like humans. One big Aldi run on Monday saves hundreds compared to eating out all week.

3. Washing Machine

Builders, electricians, and plumbers go through work clothes. An in-unit washing machine means no laundrette trips and no wearing yesterday's gear. It sounds basic, but 90% of hotels don't offer it.

4. Separate Living Space

The difference between a hotel room and a serviced apartment is the living room. After a 10-hour shift, nobody wants to sit on a bed staring at a wall-mounted TV. A sofa, a coffee table, and some breathing room changes the entire experience.

5. WiFi That Works

Not hotel WiFi that drops every 30 minutes and requires you to re-enter a room number. Proper broadband. Your crew needs to FaceTime their families, stream football, and occasionally send emails. It should just work.

Major Cardiff Projects Driving Demand

If you're reading this, you're probably working on or near one of these:

  • South Wales Metro — £1bn+ transport transformation, civil engineering and rail works across Cardiff and the valleys
  • Central Square / Cardiff Transport Interchange — ongoing commercial and transport development around Cardiff Central station
  • Atlantic Wharf — major mixed-use regeneration in Cardiff Bay with years of construction ahead
  • Cardiff University expansion — campus development and refurbishment projects
  • Data centres — the Newport/Cardiff M4 corridor is seeing significant data centre investment
  • Residential developments — thousands of new homes across north Cardiff, the Bay, and surrounding areas

Cardiff is also a staging point for contractors working across South Wales — Newport (12 min by train), the Valleys, and the Vale of Glamorgan are all easily accessible.

Cardiff vs Newport — Which Base?

If your project is in Cardiff, stay in Cardiff. If it's in Newport, we have three properties there. But if you're working across both cities, here's how they compare:
